no.

The serialize_io parameter is meant to be used for debugging and
as a workaround for buggy SBP-2 targets.

BTW, there are two Mapower SBP-2 devices listed at the hardware
compatibility list at linux1394.org. The entry for the H51 does
not specify any required sbp2 load parameters, while the entry
for a different model states serialize_io=1 and max_speed=0 as
mandatory. However the need especially for the latter parameter
indicates serious hardware problems, like bad cables or noisy
boards.

Another comment on our hardware compatibility list: A qualified
entry should mention the exact kernel or driver revision used
together with the device as well as as much version information
about the device itself as the user can gather. One and the same
device model may come to market with different board or firmware
revisions. We have frequently postings on this list where people
find hardware not working like they expected after they read the
compatibility list.
