My laptop (a somewhat older Clevo 2700C (3 years old)) has a 6 pin
firewire connector (one of the reasons for buying it), but is not able
to provide bus-power to firewire devices, so laptops having a 6-pin
connector are no guarantee that they provide power.
Usually the reason is that it drains the laptop's power too much.
I myself have 2 external firewire disks, 1 uses a regular power-plug, so
I just unplug a monitor somewhere ;) the other requires it's own power
supply... which sucks as it's huge.
