I've the same problems, see my post to this mailing list:

Subject: Issues using an external IDE<->IEEE1394 combo
with an external usb2/ieee1394 aluminium enclosure and a
7200RPM IDE drive inside.
But I have to say that when I use the USB2 connection, it works
well. And the drives reach the same temperatures, doesn't it?
Or do you think the ieee1394-specific chipset in my enclosure
could be more sensible to overheat?
Moreover, the same enclosure+disk+ieee1394 wire used with a
win2k system don't lead to any (visible) problem.
Regards,
