It think it must be cable/host adapter (brand new Maxtor Cardbus
adapter), because my collegue has exectly the same devices as I do, so I
was able try a few combinations.
Strangely, there is almost no slowdown compared to when I run it without
the max_speed thing. And I have had no crashes what so ever related to
firewire with that parameter, so I am happy :)
