This is actually not different to kernel 2.4 and will not change
in foreseeable future. The devlabel utility addresses the issue.
(I did not test it yet myself.)

This is also the same with kernel 2.4. The exact behaviour, e.g.
stalled ohci1394 driver versus immediate complete kernel lockup
might vary acording to the exact system setup.
