I always use the viewcvs link, over at http://www.linux1394.org/viewcvs.

No, When I download a new kernel to compile, I always go to viewcvs and
download a new trunk tarball, unpack it and replace the ieee1394 directory
in the kernel tree. When I say replace, I mean move the old one out of the
way and then "mv trunk /linux/drivers/ieee1394'. I don't try to copy
the new files into the existing one.
I don't still have the test-8 trunk tarball (that filesystem is near
capacity) but I know I downloaded it on or shortly before Oct 21, 2003
(from viewcvs). As that is the kernel mtime on my system.
The trunk I tried for 2.6.0 was downloaded on Jan 8, 2004.
I hope this is of some help.
