Here is another test for your entertainment. Now I run two
filesystem-oriented test series. The measurement tool used was
simply "time cp source target".
I copied the Mandrake 9.2 download edition CD 1, which holds
652MB in 2141 files spread over 330 directories. The test series
involved additionaly to the Firewire HDD mentioned above:
1. a Formac CD-RW 16/10/40 with LSI bridge, Teac CD-W516EB,
udf filesystem via supermount
2. an internal IDE HDD, Maxtor 5A300J0 5400RPM 300GB 2MB UATA133,
one half full partition with ReiserFS
The respective source filesystem was unmounted + mounted just
before the copying in order to clear the vfs cache. Additionaly,
an "ls -R" was performed on the CD-RW before copying. All values
are averages of 5 tests per set.
*** copy from 1394 CD-ROM to 1394 HDD ***

B 0.11 7.53 3:35 3

*** copy from 1394 HDD to IDE HDD ***

B 0.07 6.80 49.6 13

Conclusion: There is a dramatic improvement in read performance
of the Firewire CD-ROM with kernel 2.6 relative to kernel 2.4.
It is like kernel 2.6 magically lets the CD spin a double times
faster. However harddisk performance is only unnoticeable
improved by 12% less CPU utilization.
