No, I did not imply that. There might be indeed incompatibilities
with a drive itself, independent of controller (in)compatibility.

All consumer mass storage devices for Firewire are built around
IDE to SBP-2 bridges.

By far most of the SBP-2 bridges are working well with more
recent 2.4 kernels (say, 2.4.19 or newer) for by far most of the
Linux users. In other words, some of these SBP-2 devices are
somehow not working for some Linux users. If I (or somebody else)
could explain why, these devices would already have been made
working under Linux by now... if you know what I mean. %-/

To add to the mystery, there are actually only very few bridge
chips common --- but the various bridges built around them differ
nevertheless.

BTW I am using a Formac 5.25" drive successfully since some
earlier 2.4 kernels. But it is not the kind of enclosure you are
looking for since it was never sold without a drive and is based
on an older chipset that would be very slow for harddisks.

If you go shopping in Paris, look out for Apple retailers. They
usually have a wider range of Firewire products than Wintel PC
dealers.
