hi there,

firewire used to work perfectly under 2.4.x kernel (still does in fact)
with 2.6 (i have tried different source gentoo/mm5 2.6.0 2.6.1... )

  modules ieee1394 and ohci1394 load

I plug my hard drive (a laval ide-firewire adaptor) the sbp2 modules
loads itself (i use devfs)
and dmesg reports this

ieee1394: Host added: ID:BUS[0-00:1023] GUID[474fc0002ce76c01]
ieee1394: Node added: ID:BUS[0-01:1023] GUID[00043b000000050b]
ieee1394: The root node is not cycle master capable; selecting a new
root node and resetting...
ieee1394: Node changed: 0-01:1023 -> 0-00:1023
ieee1394: Node changed: 0-00:1023 -> 0-01:1023
sbp2: $Rev$ Ben Collins <bcollins@debian.org>
scsi0 : SCSI emulation for IEEE-1394 SBP-2 Devices
ieee1394: sbp2: Error logging into SBP-2 device - login timed-out

in /sys/ i have
  ls /sys/bus/ieee1394/devices/
     474fc0002ce76c01 fw-host0
without any device pluged-in
with the drive i have 2 other directories with weird names
(dont have the device at the moment though)

I have an inspiron 8100 PIII-M with TI PCI4451 chipset
gentoo linux

I tried to compile the kernel with/without acpi amd preempt
didn't make any difference

I can't figure what to do next

any help will be welcome

thank you

Philippe
