Hi,
I have been unable to use my Firewire IDE drive for a while except in
USB mode. I have seen some other people who have the same problem with
the same chip set - a prolific PL-3507 USB/Firewire IDE controller.
The symptom of the problem was that as soon as I connected the drive,
dmesg showed me that there was a "login timeout."
Prolific have just recently put together a reasonable support page,
however and after months of frustration I have found that they made BIOS
updates for the PL 3507's CPU. I applied them and now my drive works
in Linux.
You need to know which revision of the chip you have (A or B and
above) e.g. I have a 'C' version of the chip so I downloaded the BIOS
update for "B and above." You also need to use their rom-update
software on a windows machine (sorry - don't know how to do this on
Linux) to send the update to your Firewire drive via a USB cable.
The website address is:
http://tech.prolific.com.tw/
As I was writing this message I checked the url and they seem to have
broken their support page (it has a lot of ODBC error messages). I
still have of the updates, though.
Regards,
Tim
