I just found this page
http://www.minet.net/spip/article.php3?id_article=101 (luckily I speak
french), which mentioned that sd_mod was required to mount the iPod file
system. Since sd_mod wasn't loaded, I ran "modprobe sd_mod" and
low-and-behold, /dev/sda was created!!! I've added "add above sbp2
sd_mod" to my /etc/modules.conf file, which I hope, will fix the
problem. :-)
