Gscanbus reads the topology map from the local node. The map
contains the self id info and gscanbus builts its internal and
finally its graphical representation of the network from it. If
the local node was unable to obtain proper self id info, gscanbus
cannot draw the bus.
(BTW gscanbus does not display subtrees below nodes that have
more than 3 child nodes attached. It also prints some irritating
error messages if a repeater without config rom is attached, but
that is perfectly normal.)

The fact that one of them behaves so much different is certainly
