I can try that.

I'll also try it on my wife's computer when I get a chance. She's got
firewire on Windows2k.

The case is a large 5 1/4" one with builtin fan and powersupply. I
bought it just so I wouldn't have to deal with a wall wart
transformer. It feels cool to the touch. The fact that it also craps
out under USB2.0 access bothers me too. It could just be a crappy
chipset.

That's what I figure, esp since I can access the drive from the USB2.0
side of the interface, but it locks up as well once enough data is
copied. But it locks the system hard, whereas the IEEE1394 side just
locks up the drive.

Can you share your configuration info with the rest of us? Which
controller card, drive cases/chipsets, etc?

Thanks,
John
