First thing to try is to switch serialization on for sbp2.
See the sbp2 documentation at www.linux1394.org.
If that does not help, replace linux-2.6/drivers/ieee1394 by the trunk
directory from the Subversion repo at linux1394.org.
If there are still problems, remove all non-essential kernel options.

Sbp2 should perform nearly the same under kernel 2.4 and 2.6. In fact, I
found once that reading from CD-ROM is much improved under kernel 2.6
compared to 2.4.
The "aborting sbp2 command" errors are serious scsi transport problems
which may even lead to data corruption. Alas there is a multitude of
possible causes for this type of error. Sometimes people don't
experience data corruption, just a considerable slow-down accompanied by
these messages. Still, it is a serious error condition AFAIU.

That, or the newer kernel reveals a subtle compatibility problem with
the device's firmware that was masked in the earlier kernels. However
kernel bugs are more likely.

I am successfully using 2.6.8-rc2 and 2.6.8.1 with replaced 1394 drivers
ever since 2.6.8-rc2 was available. I use it on a single-processor x86
machine with a VIA OHCI controller, 3 different harddisks, 2 different
CD-RWs, and a hub. I posted the config that I used for 2.6.8-rc2 here:
