I've skimmed this thread, but not really followed what I've seen. Anyhow,
here is my experience:
When I'm copying lots of large, 1.8GB files to my new firewire 800 drive it
periodically just stops transferring (the light on the drive actually changes
back to the idle state) and then restarts again at full tilt.
In /var/log/syslog I have lots of these lines:

During the copy my load tops out around 9 and top tells me cp is using about
10% of my Opteron 142 (x86info says Opteron[SH7-B3]).
