Just to put my oar in on this topic, I was having this problem
on my main machine, tried a different 1394 card (VIA chip vs Agere)
without effect, but found that another couple of machines worked
without fault when using the same card and external box (Agere).

The box that didn't work has three times the horsepower of the other
two. I cured that one with io_serialise=1.

2.4.26 (or so) kernels on all three.
