Can I somehow help further?
As follows, I'm now disbelieving these additional specific hypotheses of
why, in 2.6 without serialize_io, always I see "aborting sbp2 command"
reduce thruput 100X or so.

Sorry no change: with SMP off, still I get the "aborting sbp2 command"
death in 2.6.9-rc2, as soon as I try dd more than a few blocks, although
either serialize_io=1 or 2.4 work fine.

'Sorry no change:' with an actual uniprocessor, 'still I get the
"aborting sbp2 command" death in 2.6.9-rc2, as soon as I try dd more
than a few blocks, although either serialize_io=1 or 2.4 work fine'.
Specifically I tried the 2.6.7 Linux of Knoppix 3.6 with:
255MB LOWMEM available.
CPU0: Intel Pentium III (Coppermine) stepping 03
..... CPU clock speed is 866.0244 MHz.

I can of course modprobe substitute .ko that I build myself ...

Ouch that config doesn't boot here. I tried as is, then I tried
combinations of telling make xconfig to add EXT3 and INITRD and E100.
Still no boot.
Me, I don't know how to capture the [ OK ] vs. [ FAILED ] messages that
the Red Hat boot gives me, but in there on screen I'm told of
unexpectedly read only files, and eventually the boot halts with the
familiar catch-all complaint:
Kernel panic: VFS unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(...
