The answer is I see, when I boot Knoppix with no FireWire device
connected, is that ...

The 2.6.7 of Knoppix 3.6 populates lsmod and reports via dmesg:

ohci1394: $Rev: 1223 $ Ben Collins
sbp2: $Rev: 1219 $ Ben Collins

The 2.4.27 of Knoppix 3.6 populates lsmod and reports via dmesg:

ohci1394: $Rev: 1045 $ Ben Collins
sbp2: $Rev: 1074 $ Ben Collins

Sorry I was slow to understand this question. I remember before I
thought sometimes I had to modprobe sbp2, but I can't reproduce that
result now.

All I can reproduce now is what you heard already i.e. I get "aborting
sbp2 command" in 2.6 unless before use I:

modprobe -r sbp2
modprobe sbp2 serialize_io=1

P.S. I had an HDD, but its one FireWire port died, specifically it was
an Apple Titanium in its T = target boot mode. I'll go try to find a
friend to loan me another, and report those results too.
