Under kernel 2.4, it can made the default by
options sbp2 sbp2_serialize_io=1
in /etc/modules.conf. Under kernel 2.6 it is of course
options sbp2 serialize_io=1
in /etc/modprobe.conf.
On a side note, I once put exactly this into modprobe.conf on
my Linux 2.6 PC. I have updated kernel and drivers since but
never bothered to test whether I can do without this option now.
All my equipment works reliably without this under Linux 2.4.

Actually he switched sbp2_serialize_io to 1 as the default for the
linux-2.4 branch since revision 1227.
Just remember: The serialization may avoid problems with a faulty
SBP-2 bridge firmware, but it may also mask bugs in the Linux kernel.
