If the device works under kernel 2.4 without serialization (check
the init message from sbp2), then it must be a bug in kernel 2.6.

Ah, the modutils directory is new to me. It is distro specific.
Google says it exists also on Debian.

The modutils for kernel 2.6 take modprobe.conf or---and this was
also new to me until now---the /etc/modprobe.d/ directory.

(And just for completeness: Some distros used /etc/conf.modules
in ancient times.)
