The login timeout could, among other reasons, be caused by the max
packet size problem described in the links (though I believe there
should have been complaints about too big packets prominently in the
syslog), or by the overall flakiness of the earlier 2.6 kernels.
FireWire is still very problematic under 2.6, but 2.6.8.1 should work
better than 2.6.5.
