Very probably a hotplug problem of the scsi drivers, or how sbp2 deals
with them. Sbp2 in Linux 2.6.7 already contains all relevant updates
from linux1394.org, so the only chances I see here are an update of the
scsi subsystem (practically of the whole kernel) or a dumbed-down kernel
configuration (e.g. no smp support or whatnot).

The latest kernel I tested, linux-2.6.8.1 from kernel.org, featured
those hangs with scd devices (sr_mod), but so far not with sd devices
like harddisks.

Also try serialize_io=1 --- if you didn't do so already. The inquiry
hack is only relevant during initial scanning of the device. A reduced
max_speed may help with substandard hardware (EMI, noise) or in rare
cases where the actual link speed of a device is not recognized by the
drivers.

I hate to say this: Yes, you could back down to kernel 2.4. I believe
there are contributed binary packages available for Mandrake 10.
