Correct me if I am wrong, but AFAIK an SMP machine can boot a UP kernel
just as well. If the problem vanishes under a UP kernel, please report
it as a bug to linux1394-devel.

It is obviously a bug in the 1394 drivers or of one of the kernel parts
they use.
