If it really spins down during operation, it may be insufficient bus power.

Can be kernel bugs (SBP-2 with kernel 2.6 does not work at all or not
well enough for several people), firmware bugs of the drive (try
modprobe sbp2 serialize_io=1), defects on the disk, noise on the
controller or cable (front panel connectors have been discussed here
recently), or a power problem.

This renders defects on the disk and firmware bugs less likely. Kernel
2.6 crappiness, EMI, and power loss remain as candidates.
