Get only timecode from DV over 1394?

I'm just starting to sketch out a datalogging project, and would like to
be able to correlate the data with the timecode of DV video.

Basically, I'd like to either a) use DV timecode as the timestamp in my
logs, or b) periodically log the current DV timecode with a system
timestamp. Ultimately I'd like to have the "deck control" integrated,
such that starting the camcorder starts datalogging. (Or the other way
around, whichever is easier.)

I have no interest in the video data, I'm perfectly happy to let the
tape capture that in the field.

I'm looking for a suggestion as to where to begin, either with existing
tools, or perhaps a library with the right functions.
