Hmmm, I do 4x burn over firewire (plain S400) with no problem, and I'm not
fiddling around with gapcounts at all (I don't even know how to do that).
I can play around on the firewire harddisk (which is not only on the same
firewire cable, but on the same IDE cable as its a two-bay enclosure)
while the DVD writer is working without any speed decrease. Big file
transfers are out of the question, of course, but that'd be the same if it
the drives shared one internal IDE port without the firewire in between.

Are you using growisofs to burn your DVD's? I had speed issues with that
program too until I added a 32MB buffer (using pipebuf or similar). Makes
sure that the internal DVD writer buffer is always well fed, since that
one is way too small.
