Did you run "umount ...", then disconnected the drive, then run
"rescan-scsi-bus.sh -r"? The latter is required after device
disconnection under kernel 2.4 before any further access to the scsi
subsystem (except with a kernel patch).

Try the hints given in the FAQ at www.linux1394.org about aborted sbp2
commands. If this still does not help, wait for kernel 2.6.11 or use the
latest 2.6.11 prerelease together with 1394 drivers from the
linux1394.org source repository. (Its "trunk" directory is a replacement
for linux/drivers/ieee1394.)

Most adapters with VIA chips work fine. Many Linux users have one,
including I, and I do not even see those sbp2 datatransfer problems
under kernel 2.6 other people keep reporting. (None of my FireWire
devices is Prolific based though.)
A few VIA based adapters were found to feature very specific problems,
but according to your logs, your card is not of this (rare) category.
