(RHEL v3 is based on Linux 2.4.21.)

Due to incomplete implementation, older 2.4 kernels and some 2.6 kernels
--- everything between 2.6.3 (exclusive?) and 2.6.10 inclusive --- do
not support some of the multi-unit bridges. They recognize only one of
the subunits (in terms of IEEE 1212).

Can't comment on this one.

Dan Dennedy mentioned that at least kernel 2.4.22 is required for the
Powerfile C200 jukebox, which is also a multi-unit device. It may also
be possible to insert the driver sources from linux1394.org's linux-2.4
branch into Red Hat's kernel.
In case of kernel 2.6, either an old & buggy kernel or the current
drivers from linux1394.org are required. The latter compile only in
2.6.11-rc#.
