There are many levels where it may have not been recognized. The PCI
subsystem may have a problem with the host adapter (probably not the
case with your system since there is at least a sysfs entry); the host
adapter may have not activated all its ports (this Adaptec card is
probably not one of those though); the self-configuration phase of the
FireWire bus may have gone wrong; the nodemgr of the ieee1394 driver may
be unable to read the device's type; the sbp2 driver may have
difficulties to log in; the scsi device files may be missing... Check
the syslog for messages from the drivers.

If devices appear in the compatibility database at linux1394.org, this
does not mean they work for everyone, alas. Especially not under Linux
2.6.
