FireWire is basically a peer-to-peer bus where devices of any type can
be connected at once; e.g. a few cameras and a PC, or a few PCs and one
or more cameras (all PCs could listen to the video stream from each
camera), PCs sharing a CD jukebox over FireWire, PCs running IP over
FireWire as an ethernet replacement, and so on.

Yes.

I wanted to know if the notebook would detect the PC, or if not, if at
least the PC detects the notebook. However you should not go and buy a
cable only for this test since this won't give very much insight.

Instead, could you compile the kernel + modules with "excessive
debugging output" enabled in the IEEE 1394 section of the kernel
configuration? Then post the syslog messages from ieee1394 and ohci1394
when the drivers are loaded without the camera connected, and when the
camera is plugged in/ switched on. (If the log becomes too big, do not
post it to the list but e.g. put it on a web site.) If you never
installed a kernel from source before, first look for documentation on
how it is done on your distribution and how to copy the configuration of
the previously used kernel package.
