All distros work which are based on Linux kernel 2.4 or which provide
kernel 2.4 at least as an alterantive to kernel 2.6, assumed the
distributors enabled IEEE 1394 support.
Kernels up to 2.6.3(?) should work.
Kernels > 2.6.3(?) may work depending on the way of how the enclosures
represent their units. However the chance that it works seems to be less
than 50%.
Kernels >= 2.6.9 need to be updated to sbp2 revision 1249 or later in
order to recognize _all_ multi-unit devices (like kernel 2.4 does). The
mainline kernel from kernel.org, including Linux 2.6.11.6, contains an
older revision of sbp2 which is unsufficient. Some other kernels like
recent ones from the -mm sideline have a proper sbp2 driver.
If you are not afraid to re-compile the distributor's kernel, you could
replace the drivers/ieee1394 subdirectory of the kernel sources by
sources from linux1394.org.
Linux 2.6.9 works with linux1394.org's rev 1251 or older.
Linux 2.6.10 works with linux1394.org's rev 1254 or older.
Newer revisions of the 1394 drivers compile only in Linux >= 2.6.11.
